Chaque mercenaire possède de zéro à deux traits de départ, traits qui représentent autant de particularités physiques et psychologiques à même de caractériser et individualiser le mercenaire via une combinaison unique de forces et faiblesses[1]. Il en existe en tout 44 : certains sont positifs, d'autres négatifs, d'autres encore les deux à la fois.

Certains backgrounds interdisent certains traits, tout comme certains traits en interdisent d'autres [2]. Par exemple : être à la fois optimiste et pessimiste, être athlétique et avoir un pied bot, etc.

Enfin, certains traits conditionnent certains évènements. Lesdits évènements permettant éventuellement par la suite de gagner de nouveaux traits ou encore d'en perdre d'anciens.

Athletic This character is physically fit.
  • Builds up 2 less fatigue for each tile travelled
Clubfooted
Bleeder
Bleeder This character is prone to bleeding and will do so longer than most others.
  • Will receive bleeding damage for 1 additional turn
Bloodthirsty
Bloodthirsty This character is prone to excessive violence and cruelty towards his enemies. An opponent isn't good enough dead, his head needs to be on a spike!
  • All kills are fatalities (if the weapon allows).
Brave
Brave Just keep on going. This character will bravely venture into the unknown.
  • +5 Resolve
Fainthearted
Bright
Bright This character has an easier time than most with grasping new concepts and adapting to the situation.
  • +10% Experience Gain
Dumb
Brute
Brute Not one for delicate attacks, this character will use full force for additional damage when striking an opponent's head in melee at the expense of some accuracy.
  • +15% Damage on a hit to the head
  • -5 Melee Skill
Clubfooted
Clubfooted Afflicted with clubfoot as a child, this character still has a harder time walking than most.
  • Builds up 2 more fatigue for each tile travelled
Athletic
Clumsy
Clumsy This character can be as dangerous for himself as to his opponent.
  • -5 Melee Skill
Dexterous
Cocky
Cocky All too easy! This character can be a bit too cocky for his own good.
  • +5 Resolve
  • -5 Melee Defense
  • -5 Ranged Defense
Craven
Craven Run for your lives! This character is a craven and will run at the slightest sign of the odds turning against him.
  • -10 Resolve
  • Is always content with being in reserve
Fearless
Dastard
Dastard This character will turn tail on the first possible occasion. Better have an eye on him!
  • Will start combat at wavering morale
  • Is always content with being in reserve
Deathwish
Deathwish I'm not dead yet! This character doesn't care about receiving injuries and will fight on regardless.
  • No morale check triggered upon losing hitpoints
Determined
Determined Don't worry, I got this. This character shows a formidable amount of self-confidence.
  • Will start combat at confident morale if permitted by mood
Insecure
Dexterous
Dexterous A dexterous character has an easier time hitting his opponent in melee.
  • +5 Melee Skill
Clumsy
Disloyal
Disloyal I have to put myself first! This character is rather disloyal and will be fast to leave should you ever run out of crowns or provisions.

Drunkard There's no question what this character spends his crowns on. Expect him to drink heavily before any battle, in secret if need be.

Fainthearted
Fainthearted This character needs some warm words and a pat on the back from time to time

Brave
Fat
Fat This character is more interested in pork chops than exercising, and will run out of breath more easily.
  • +10 Hitpoints

Fearless
Fearless There are a lot of old friends to meet in the afterlife. This character is not afraid of death.

Craven
Fragile
Fragile With a physique like a eggshell, this guy is not the natural born brawler.

Gluttonous
Gluttonous Tasty, let's have another one! Better bring extra provisions when traveling with this character and expect them to leave fast if you ever run out of provisions entirely.

Greedy I want more! This character is greedy and will demand a higher daily payment than others with a similar background, as well as being fast to leave you if you ever run out of crowns.

Iron Jaw This character shakes off hits that would cripple a lasser man.
  • The threshold to sustain injuries on getting hit is increased by 25%
Iron Lungs
Iron Lungs This character will rarely run out of breath, whether swinging a heavy weapon or running across all the battlefield.
  • +5 Fatigue Recovery per turn
Asthmatic
Irrational
Irrational The glass is half empty now but was half full just a moment ago.
  • Has +10 or -10 Resolve randomly at every morale check
Loyal
Loyal I'm with you! This character is loyal to the end and much less likely to leave you even if you run out of crowns and provisions.

Sure Footing A sure footing makes it hard to catch this character off balance and land a hit.

Survivor Why don't you just stay dead? This character is a survivor and will outlive most of his peers.
  • Has a 90% chance to survive if struck down and not killed by a fatality
Tiny
Tiny Being very short of height, this character is used to slipping through.

  • -15% Melee Damage
Tough
Tough This character is tough as nails, shrugging off hits and blows.
