- The total amount of provisions you carry. The average man requires 2 provisions per day and more on difficult terrain. Running out of provisions will lower morale and will eventually lead to your people deserting you before dying of starvation.
Provisions are food items in Battle Brothers. By default, hired characters require two units of provisions per day. The Gluttonous and Spartan traits affect this amount. Each type of provision will spoil after a specific amount of time. High quality provisions usually take longer to spoil than lower quality provisions. Your mercenaries will always eat or drink the provisions which are the closest to spoil.
If you fail to feed your mercenaries, their mood will decrease and after a while and if angered enough, they may decide to desert your company.
Food variety may affect your company's mood in different ways. The Good Food Variety event will boost the mood of your men; on the contrary, the No Food Variety event can result in the mood penalty for the mercenaries; Fat and/or Gluttonous are affected stronger than others, while Spartan brothers are indifferent to provisions variety in any way. Gladiators require high priced provisions to maintain their adequate mood, while lowborn mercenaries are well used to the most basic food around (ground grains). Also, a wide variety of provision types is required for you to be able to hire a follower cook.

- Spoil time is the best value provided for provisions bought at the Marketplace or looted from greenskin in case of Strange Meat.
- Provisions looted from defeated enemies vary dramatically in their remaining spoil time. This is especially true for Strange Meat that most commonly will have only a day or two before spoil.
